Dividing up your attention:

Assessing the correlation-focus
of individuals and communities
(bare bones version)

``Saying science is about consensus is like saying politics is about belief, or religion is about observation.
Match these things up correctly and they independently deserve respect.'' (Anonymous, 2007)

Introduction

As part of a larger collection of activities for developing awareness on multiple scales of time and space, the applet here is designed to help inventory ways that you connect to the niche-networks around. A simpler way to visualize those connnections is sketched at right. Such inventories are one way to help inform meme-expression in metazoan communities to all layers of community structure. Consider this in light of the emerging conclusion that managed gene-expression in eukaryotes is crucial to the development and operation of individual metazoans. As with ideas, with genes an ability to adapt the codes expressed in light of inputs from more than one level of organization seems crucial e.g. to embryo development and to immune response. Bacteria and other prokaryotic microbes are in that sense our genetic ideologues, less able to adapt their song and hence show awareness on multiple levels, but more likely to be "all that's left" when we're confronted with decreasing thermodynamic availability i.e. less free-energy per capita and/or an unfriendly environment.

To check out the methods we're struggling with here, you might begin by correcting the values in the table below. This asks for the percentage of your attention focused toward (or the number of waking hours spent) making things happen on each of six correlation scales during the past week. Then click the "UpDate Values" button above the piechart below. In addition to generating an interesting chart (whose changes might be fun to monitor over the years), this page also calculates your niche-level multiplicity, a quantity that may prove useful to demographic studies downstream. Although we expect yours to be relatively insensitive to the precise values that you input, significant impacts to the value for a community might be expected in times of crisis (e.g. during power outages) or when unemployment increases (independent of GDP).

Bare Bones Data Table

First two layers: Begin with correlations setup in context of that boundary in common to most multi-celled lifeforms on earth: The metazoan skin.

Self: Focus inward from one's metazoan skin
Number (or %) of waking hours
Examples of this include...
Nutrition: attention directed toward taking care of yourself on the molecular level.
Fitness/Shelter: effort directed toward taking care of your physical condition.
Learning: attention directed toward maintaining and improving your awareness of the world around.
Note: In today's world, some of one's attention to a "day job" often serves to help maintain one's internal correlations with the world around. Thus along with time spent attending to these things directly, add into the entry at right that part of your work week used to underwrite these things.

One-on-one: Focus outward from one's metazoan skin
Number (or %) of waking hours
Examples of this include...
Friend: attention directed toward doing stuff with friends.
Partner: effort directed toward engaging a partner (e.g. of the business or reproductive sort).
Mentor: attention directed toward mentoring other lifeforms.
Note: Again, if these activities cost money as well as time, add into the entry at right that part of your work week needed to cover those costs. Do the same for table entries to follow as well.

Now turn to correlations setup in context of a boundary recognized (behaviorally at least) by many animals on earth, namely the gene-pool boundary and other molecule code-pool gradients.

Family: Focus inward from your molecular-codepool boundary
Number (or %) of waking hours
Examples of this include...
Ancestors: attention directed toward quality-time with parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, etc.
Offspring: effort directed toward engaging, serving, or just doing stuff with your kids, grandkids, etc.
In-Laws: attention directed toward your reproductive partner's ancestors, siblings, etc.

Hierarchy/Consensus: Focus outward from your molecular-codepool boundary
Number (or %) of waking hours
Examples of this include...
Community: attention directed toward community activities not otherwise included in these tables.
Employer: effort directed toward being an employer, or toward engaging/serving your employer as an end in itself.
Government: attention directed toward engaging and/or serving local, regional, national or international governing bodies.
Note: Thanks to the invention of money and its utility, effort expended "at work" should only be attributed as "serving one's employer" if it is not directed specifically toward funds used to nurture correlations on other levels. Thus effort focussed on paying for your kid's college education goes into the family table above, while attention directed to going above and beyond the call of paycheck to help out at work goes here.

Finally, consider correlations set up with respect to that most recently-emergent (and complex) of physical boundaries, i.e. the boundary between pools of idea codes.

Culture/Believing: Focus inward from your memetic-codepool boundary
Number (or %) of waking hours
Examples of this include...
Tradition: effort directed toward serving and/or evolving traditions at home and abroad.
Arts/Sport: attention directed toward serving as performer (or active spectator) in cultural (e.g. arts and crafts) and/or sport activities.
Religion: attention directed toward participating in belief-focused activities, including but not limited to organized religion.

Knowledge/Observing: Focus outward from your memetic-codepool boundary
Number (or %) of waking hours
Examples of this include...
Profession: attention directed toward serving a multi-cultural community of organisms in some professional capacity.
Archives: effort directed toward exploring, and contributing to, your species' archival knowledge base.
Field/Study: attention directed toward faithful observation of the world around.
