jMol series grown graphene

Here's a 1327-atom model of two-dimensional dendritic solidification in a droplet of liquid carbon. The atoms of carbon which remain in the liquid state are excluded from the picture for clarity. This type of sheet structure seems to explain both the diffraction and high resolution images obtained from the unlayered graphene cores of micron-sized graphite onions found in presolar grains extracted from the meteorite Murchison.
