The laboratory study of whole astrophysical objects from across the galaxy, like the very objects that astronomers study by remote sensing (with help from scattered or emitted electromagnetic radiation), is providing to researchers a new kind of reality check on their theories.  It also provides to astronomy and astrophysics students experience with cutting edge instruments that have a growing number of more down-to-earth applications.
